What you need to know
Use the points below to compare providers quickly and focus on what matters for your situation. Different trainees prioritise different features. Recent graduates should check assessed teaching hours, career changers may want mentor support and job guidance, and aspiring ESL teachers often need a Level 5 diploma for stronger recognition.
Format trade-offs
Online options offer flexibility and lower cost. In-person courses include mentor-led practice and observed hours employers notice.
Check accreditation
Look for externally regulated credentials such as Level 5 or CELTA-style training when your target market expects it.
Prioritise teaching practice
Assessed, observed hours build classroom readiness and often make interviews easier.
Match market needs
Entry roles may accept short certificates. Higher pay and stability often favour stronger qualifications with observed practice.
Use a checklist
Compare syllabus, assessed hours, fees, and job support. A short consultation can save you time and money.
Quick comparison: online vs face-to-face TEFL courses
Online TEFL
Online TEFL suits trainees who need flexibility and lower upfront costs, letting you study around work or travel. Many online courses are theory-heavy and self-directed, often without supervised live classroom hours. They can work well for people who already have teaching experience or a limited budget.
If your target market expects observed teaching practice, plan how you will complete those hours before applying for roles. Some teachers build experience through tutoring or volunteer teaching to strengthen their CV.
In-person TEFL
In-person TEFL courses provide mentor feedback, classroom management practice, and cohort support. The higher fees and travel can pay off through stronger classroom readiness, because assessed lessons and written evaluations give you real evidence to share in interviews.
Before you enrol, confirm what is included in the “120-hour” total. Ask how many hours are observed, who provides feedback, and how assessment is recorded.
If you want a clear view of what a typical 120-hour course includes, you can start here: TEFL course overview.
Accreditation and recognition: what employers actually check
Accreditation often determines whether an employer or visa officer accepts your TEFL course. External regulators set curriculum and assessment standards, which makes it easier for hiring teams to compare providers.
Credentials carry different weight around the world. A 120-hour certificate can meet entry-level requirements in many countries, while Level 5 or CELTA-style training is often preferred for stronger contracts and long-term progression.
Before you pay, verify three practical details:
- Check the provider can explain who regulates the qualification and what level it is.
- Ask how assessment is recorded and whether you receive written feedback from observed practice.
- Look at real job adverts in your target country and match your course to the requirements.

Teaching practice: hours, formats, and why it matters
Teaching practice often decides how quickly you feel confident in front of a class. Live, observed teaching with real learners and trainer feedback is one of the clearest signals of competence. Employers regularly shortlist candidates who can show supervised lessons.
When comparing providers, look for these details:
- Supervised live hours with real students (not only peer teaching).
- Named assessors and structured feedback.
- Written evaluations you can reference in interviews.
- Clear explanation of what counts as “observed” or “assessed”.
Different practice formats develop different skills. Observed lessons show classroom performance. Microteaching helps technique. Tutoring strengthens planning and differentiation. A good course combines these in a practical way.
Career outcomes: pay, roles, and regional preferences
Market expectations vary by region and school type. Many language centres accept a basic TEFL plus a degree for entry roles, while competitive private schools and international programmes often prefer stronger qualifications and observed practice.
Pay and contract stability often rise with credential level and experience. Treat salary ranges as a guide, then verify current listings in your target location.

Training in Bangkok: Level 5 + observed practice
If you are planning to teach in Thailand, many trainees choose to train in Bangkok because it gives you real classroom exposure, local guidance, and a clearer route into interviews.
Essential TEFL runs an in-person Level 5 programme in Bangkok with teaching practice in partner schools. Job support is available for eligible applicants, and you will also get practical guidance on documents and the work permit process.

Cost, time, and logistics
Advertised price is only part of the picture. Online TEFL is usually cheaper upfront, while in-person training costs more because it includes trainer time, classroom space, and supervised teaching practice.
Common extras to budget for:
- Teaching practice add-ons or supervision fees.
- Certificate shipping or verification fees.
- Background checks.
- Travel and accommodation for in-person courses.
- Visa document preparation, depending on your destination.

Choose the right TEFL course for your goals
Choosing the right TEFL course affects your skills, visa eligibility, and how quickly you can secure a teaching role. Prioritise external regulation and documented teaching practice, because those predict classroom readiness and smoother interviews.
