No Degree? Your Guide to Teaching English in Thailand (2026)
A clear guide to TEFL training, legal employment limits and the course options available if you do not hold a university degree.
Last updated: September 2026
Many people search for teaching jobs in Thailand without a degree and find answers that make the process sound easier than it is. A bachelor’s degree is normally required for legal school teaching positions. This guide explains what TEFL training can provide, where the limits apply and what you should check before making any payment.
Important note: A TEFL certificate does not replace a bachelor’s degree or any qualification required by a school or government authority. Requirements can depend on the employer, type of institution and current regulations.
Before making payment: If you do not hold a bachelor’s degree, please contact Essential TEFL before paying for the course. We will give you an honest assessment based on your passport, qualifications and plans. Employment, job placement, visa approval and work permit approval cannot be guaranteed.
Your TEFL Course Options in Bangkok
Essential TEFL offers two in person training options in Bangkok. Applicants without a degree may be considered for either course, subject to the admission requirements. Course admission does not change the qualifications required by an employer or government authority.
Both courses provide serious teacher training, but neither qualification replaces a bachelor’s degree where one is required. Review the course dates and fees or contact us before paying if you are unsure which option is suitable.
Study for a Degree in Thailand
If you want to build a long term teaching career in Thailand, studying for a recognised degree can improve your future options.
Degree programmes to consider:
- Thongsook College offers a BA in TESOL.
- Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin offers a BEd in TESOL.
- Siam Technical College offers a TESOL degree programme with flexible study options.
Students accepted onto an eligible programme can receive university support for a renewable one year Education Visa. The university provides the supporting documents, but Thai immigration approves the visa and each renewal.
Around 80% of the programme can be completed online, depending on the institution and current course schedule. Students must still complete any required attendance and assessments in Thailand.
Course arrangements can change. Confirm the programme, fees, online study percentage and visa support directly with the university before applying.
Can I Really Teach English in Thailand Without a Degree?
For most legal school teaching positions, you should expect to need a bachelor’s degree. International schools, bilingual schools and many Thai schools also set their own qualification requirements.
Some language centres and other education providers may use different academic criteria, but this does not remove immigration or employment requirements. Ask the employer to confirm the correct visa and work permit route for your circumstances.
What Accredited In Person TEFL Training Can Provide
Accredited TEFL training can develop your lesson planning, classroom management and practical teaching skills. It can help you become a better prepared teacher, but it cannot replace a bachelor’s degree when one is required.
Both Essential TEFL course options include face to face training in Bangkok. Students learn how to plan lessons, manage a classroom and teach English clearly before completing practical teaching experience with real students.
The TQUK Level 5 course also includes formal written assessments at Level 5. These assessments require students to analyse, compare and evaluate important areas of English language teaching.
What the training includes:
- Real classroom practice in Thai schools
- Face to face support from experienced trainers
- Lesson planning and classroom management
- Formal Level 5 assessment for students taking the TQUK qualification
- General information about visa and work permit processes
Visas and Work Permits Without a Degree
For many school positions, a completed degree forms part of the employer’s visa and work permit documents. A TEFL certificate cannot override those requirements.
Read our Thai visa and work permit guide for an overview. The employer and the relevant authorities make the final decisions.
Before accepting any teaching position:
- Ask the employer which visa and work permit route applies to you.
- Request confirmation that your qualifications meet the requirements.
- Do not rely only on a verbal promise before accepting a position.
Different employers may use different academic criteria:
- Private language schools and tutoring centres
- Non formal education providers
- Positions outside Thailand under the rules of that country
Different hiring criteria do not automatically create a legal right to work in Thailand.
Where Can You Work Without a Degree?
We cannot provide a guaranteed list of Thai employers that will legally employ someone without a degree. Requirements vary by institution and can change. Major international and bilingual schools normally require a degree and relevant teaching qualifications.
Options that require careful checking:
- Language schools may set different academic requirements, but they must still confirm your legal employment route.
- Non formal education providers may operate under different requirements from mainstream schools.
- Online teaching platforms set their own academic and experience requirements.
Essential TEFL can explain the training and discuss your circumstances before you enrol. We cannot promise employment or job placement to an applicant without a degree.
